Cicadas emerge after 13 or 17 years underground“periodical cicadas”-- only found in North America -- have very long life cycles and their life cycles are synchronized.
In 1956, 1.5 million cicadas per acre were counted! (study done in forested floodplains near Chicago)

They can be loud and just annoying you with the 104-106 decibel level
